A: Reasons you may be connecting
at slow speeds One of the most common reasons
for slow internet speeds is line noise. Line
noise can occur on occasion and not have a
global affect to a user (just a random bad
phone connection), sometimes redialing helps.
* We recommend the phone cord not exceed
10 feet, the longer the cord, the more likely
line noise becomes a factor.
* Condition of the cord, the shielding or
plastic surrounding the copper wire may be
of poor grade. Thin insulation means more
line noise. Look for bends or cracks in the
cord, bite marks too if you have pets.
* Avoid using splitters or multi-jacks, more
things to mess with the line.
* If there is excess cord, do not wind it
up to be "nice and neat", winding the cord
makes it act more like an antenna, thus more
line noise. Spread it out.
* Interference from power cables, although
most power cables are shielded, they still
can produce line noise on phone cords, keep
phone cords away from any power source or
cord.
* Upgrade or update the computer or it's
modem drivers.
Those are the basics, now
to the stuff the phone company does...
* Pairgain is a technology that allows the
phone company to get more out of the existing
copper wires with out having to install more
line. This saves them millions! Because of
that savings, once Pairgain is installed,
they will never remove it. If you can never
get on faster than 26.4 , Pairgain is probably
the culprit. We can do nothing to help, except
offer one of our broadband solutions.
* Digital Phone. Cable internet providers
offer digital phone service now, digitized
phone service does not play well with dial-up
connections. If you call to the cable company,
there are things they can do to correct the
issue.
* Internal or external wiring. Very Important!!!
If you ask the phone company to check your
line, make sure you state that your request
is due to poor VOICE quality. If you tell
them Internet, they will charge you to run
a line check. They will check the line for
free if the complaint is about voice service.
Inside your home, you may have internal wiring
coverage from your phone or cable company.
Yes, your cable company may be charging you
to cover your phone line as well as your TV
connection. Usually, the phone or cable company
have an extra charge of 2.95 per month for
this. So, you may be able to get your internal
wiring checked without extra fees. Check your
bill to see. |
